The overall goal in this class is to teach the students to be effective readers. This will be accomplished by having the students do the following:
1) Read for a variety of purposes and across content areas.
2) Use a variety of skills and strategies to comprehend non-fiction and informational text.
3) Use the Six Traits of an effective reader.
4) Read with fluency silently and aloud to support comprehension.
5) Use a variety of strategies to develop and expand reading vocabulary.
6)Independently read a significant number of books and text each year. This reading will include both fiction and nonfiction in a variety of genres.

HOW ARE STUDENTS GRADES IN THIS CLASS?
Students are graded on their daily assignments and novel assessments. I use a variety of assessments so the students will not always be taking a written test for an assessment. An alternative to a written test might be a project or presentation to the class. Students will be given time in class to prepare for this.
Students will be given extra credit points for reading books, newspapers, and magazines outside of class.
Writing and reading go hand in hand, so the students will also be working on their writing skills in my reading class.
What do I expect from "you" the student?
1. Listen well in class so you will learn all that you can this year.
2. Do your reading and written assignments on time, and do them the best you can.
3. Participate in class discussions and allow others to participate also.
4. Always give me your best work and best behavior.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR WITH YOU!
